Originally from Indonesia, Merlyn landed in Singapore as a fresh graduate ten years ago. She fell in love with the little red dot for its interesting mix of cultures and has been rooting down here ever since.
Yoga found its way into Merlyn’s life in 2012, in the form of Bikram hot yoga. Yoga was initially a purely physical practice for her, as she loved the heat and the intensity that the hot classes were able to offer. Pregnancy and motherhood came next and she had to temporarily put a stop to her heated practice around 2013-2014. Yoga, during this period, provided Merlyn a safe space when she was dealing with postpartum struggles. It allowed her to channel her focus inward, reintegrate herself, before she goes back home and be ready to be a mom again. It was also during this period that her practice shifted away from hot classes to various other schools of yoga.
Merlyn personally enjoys strong and flowing practice, which she believes is beneficial to the body and helps to quiet the mind. She sees herself as a student first and a teacher second and would like to invite everyone to grow alongside with her. Through yoga, she has found acceptance in her postpartum body, hence she wishes to promote positive body image and empower everyone to achieve the same.
Off the mat, when she’s not busy chasing after her 3-year-old toddler, she’s most likely to be found reading novels and learning to pick up new languages. She speaks fluent English, Mandarin, Bahasa, some conversational Japanese and is currently learning Korean.
